Abstract

Parental assets can act as an important channel for transmitting chronic poverty across generations. In this paper we distinguish different types of parental assets and study the differential influences of parental physical assets (land), parental human capital (education), parental networking capacity (organizational membership) and parental occupation on the likelihood of escape from chronic poverty. Our analysis also separates out the effects of paternal from maternal assets as well as assets acquired through marriage.
