why relationship between economic growth and malnutrition is so varied

Abstract

A wide range of research has used cross-country data to test the relationship between economic growthand monetary measures of poverty, yet the smaller strand of research looking at the effects of growth onchildhood malnutrition – an equally important indicator of poverty - has generally found much weakerrelationships (Smith and Haddad, 2000, Apodaca, 2008). In this paper we seek to investigate why growthmalnutritionrelationships appear to be so varied across countries. To do so we replicate some of the keytests used in the literature on poverty and growth, including those for sectoral growth effects as well asrural-urban decompositions. We also explore some of the mechanisms through which growth may affectnutrition, such as health care, infrastructure and food consumption effects.
