Abstract
This significant background paper presents the first exhaustive literature survey of how existing indicators in the Demographic and Health Survey can be used in multidimensional poverty measures. It identifies the strengths and weaknesses of each indicator as an international measure; describes which dimensions and capabilities it has been used to indicate and why, and identifies empirical associations between this indicator and others. While many papers have touched on different individual indicators, this is the first comprehensively referenced survey article. It should be of use to those constructing national as well as international measures of multidimensional poverty using standard household surveys.
