A retreat to the margins?
UNCTAD, global governance and poverty reduction
Ian Taylor
2010
Abstract
UNCTAD's original remit was to engage with issues of global development, of which poverty reduction is a necessary ingredient. However, following the assertion of neo-classical policies as the dominant developmental paradigm, UNCTAD has found itself on the defensive, if not retreat. This paper critically examines the demise of UNCTAD as a strong pro-poor voice in the global governance debate and calls for a reassertion of the body as an articulator of the Global South.
