Description
A three-day national conference on structural and chronic poverty hosted by the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) of the University of the Western Cape, Isandla Institute and Studies on Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) with support from the Office of the Presidency.
The conference will bring together current knowledge of the causes of structural poverty and responses to it. It will draw lessons from two decades of poverty studies and a range of experiences from government and civil society organizations. The conference will focus particularly on the link between poverty and inequality, and will ask questions about the kind of society that is presently emerging in South Africa. It will facilitate the sharing of key insights between scholars, policymakers, civil society organizers and other practitioners from the national, regional and international context, and participants will work together to identify concrete policy directions for future and continued work. The local specificities of addressing poverty and inequality in South Africa will be clearly located in the Southern African regional context.
